Recipient Spotlight - OG Yoga

Program funding from the Boys & Girls  Foundation enables OG Yoga to deliver trauma-informed, mindfulness-based

yoga for our youth and teens to support healing, resilience, self-development and positive social change. Due to restrictions around COVID-19, OG Yoga invested in online systems with this funding and trained our partner organizations to facilitate virtual programming. Our yoga instructors meet our youth where they are to provide direct access to evidence-based, trauma- and diversity-informed yoga. With this funding we were able to create and offer OG Yoga Recess virtually to San Diego Unified School District kids, referrals from Mental Health Services  and Boys & Girls Clubs Payne Family Branch. In the US, nearly three million children - one out of every twenty-five children - experience some form of endangerment each year. Almost one third of these children experience direct physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. By the time a child reaches their 18th birthday, the probability that he or she will have been directly affected by interpersonal or community violence is approximately one in four. Yoga strengthens the mind and body connection, thereby reducing overstimulation and reactivity, and encouraging relaxation. Yoga gives youth the power to reclaim control of their bodies and experiences. OG Yoga services provide children and teens with the tools they need to control internal stress, build strength, and develop equanimity in the face of extreme stressors such as mental or physical abuse, abandonment and arrest. Our instructors teach and invite students to practice (1) breathing techniques for self-regulation, (2) self-inquiry to process thoughts, feelings and sensations, and (3) strategies to respond mindfully instead of reacting out of habitual behavioral patterns based in trauma and anger.
